Explaining Depression to My Mother

Conveniently Located To Serve West Palm, Miami, Orlando, and Jacksonville.

As a teen, explaining depression to my mother seems like an impossible venture. How do I describe my feelings in a way she will understand? What if she gets upset with me? Will she accept me? Will she help me find teen counseling? Do I even need counseling? Then I stop myself and realize she loves me, and explaining depression to my mother no longer seems like such a scary thing. But how do I start?

Explaining Depression to My Mother as a Teenager

So, explaining depression to my mother, how do I even begin?

First thing’s first, I should probably try to understand how I’m feeling for myself. Taking a deep breath, I begin thinking about how I sink into feelings of despair and hopelessness. Writing these feelings down can help to articulate my thoughts when I sit down with my mother.

Then, I need to find a time to sit down with my mom to explain. Mentioning depression in passing on our way out of the door in the morning might not be the best time. Instead, maybe I should ask her when she has time to sit down and talk. During a meal or in the evening could be best. Since we’ve been arguing more lately, maybe I can begin by apologizing to her. I’ll tell her how sorry I am for being difficult lately before I start explaining depression to my mother.

Once we sit down to talk, I’ll begin by trying to tell her how I feel. If I can’t find the words, maybe I’ll let her know how I want to explain myself better, but I can’t find what to say. If she suggests counseling, I’ll try to be open to the idea. Talking with a stranger is intimidating, but I feel like it might be able to help me. It could also help my mom and I reach a better place since we don’t see eye-to-eye as much.

Explaining depression to my mother is daunting, but I know she loves me and she wants what’s best for me. We can work through this.
